QUICK READING TO GET STARTED
Thank you for down loading GEDitCOM --- the customizable genealogical data editor for GEDCOM files (GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication files). It gives you 100% access to the powerful GEDCOM standard. Your options are:
1. FREE GEDCOM Viewer
You can run GEDitCOM now and use it forever as a FREE GEDCOM file viewer. When the program starts and you are asked to supply an "unlocking code", simply click the "Run Viewer/Demo" button to run the free viewer. You can use the "Help" command in the "Customize" menu to learn how to view GEDCOM files.
2. GEDitCOM Demo
Running GEDitCOM as a free GEDCOM file viewer is also a demonstration of the full version of GEDitCOM. You will have access to all features of GEDitCOM such as customizing the user interface and editing GEDCOM files. You can use the "Help" command in the "Custom" menu to learn how to edit GEDCOM files and customize GEDitCOM. The only restrictions in the demo version are that you will not be able to save your edits to any GEDCOM files with more than 20 individuals and you will not be able to save any GEDitCOM Log Files. To unlock your copy of GEDitCOM and allow full editing capabilities, please take the time to register as explained below.
3. Unlocking GEDitCOM
When you supply an "unlocking code" when GEDitCOM first starts, you will permanently unlock you copy of GEDitCOM and enable all file editing options. You can get your personalized unlocking code by registering GEDitCOM as explained below.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
GEDitCOM requires a Power Macintosh (or the newer G3 and iMac Macintoshes) with a color monitor and System 7.0 or newer. For speed, GEDitCOM loads entire files into memory, thus the more memory the better. If GEDitCOM can not open one of your files, simply allocate more memory to GEDitCOM by using the "Get Info" command in the "Finder" after selecting the GEDitCOM application icon.
GEDCOM EXAMPLE
The GEDitCOM down load comes with a folder called "GEDCOM Example." In that folder is a file "Windsor.GED" which is a GEDCOM file containing all the descendants of King George VI of England who was the father of the current Queen Elizabeth II.
There are some multimedia links in the example file and several JPEG files in the "GEDCOM Example" folder. You can view these images while running GEDitCOM, but you may have to configure the GEDitCOM helper applications to select the application you want to use to view JPEG images. For more information, see the "Viewing Multimedia" help topic.
There is a link in "Windsor.GED" to a CNN movie clip about the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. This file was too large to include in GEDitCOM down load. You can grab your own copy at
View the movie and the click and hold on the image to copy its source. After down loading the movie file, you can view it from within GEDitCOM with the aid of any QuickTime movie helper application.
REGISTERING GEDitCOM
GEDitCOM has the following pricing options:
Single-User licenses: $50 per copy
Site license: $500
A site license covers all locations for your organization within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software.
ON-LINE ORDERING
You can pay for GEDitCOM two ways. First, you can register on-line by using the Kagi on-line ordering system. The web site for registering GEDitCOM is <http://order.kagi.com/?QQN>. On-line orders must be paid by credit card. Simply fill out the forms, select the type of licence and number of copies you want, and then follow instructions to submit your payment. Remember, you must provide either your email or postal address for me to be able to contact you with your personalized unlocking code.
EMAIL, FAX, POSTAL, or INVOICE ORDERING
The second way to pay for GEDitCOM is to run the Register program that came with the GEDitCOM down load (if you do not have the Register program, contact me at <John.Nairn@m.cc.utah.edu> or <John.Nairn@kagi.com> to get a copy, or down load the GEDitCOM package at <http://www.mse.utah.edu/~nairn/geditcom.html>). Enter your name, your email address, your postal address, and the number of single user licenses you desire or choose to order a site license. Either your email or postal address is required for me to be able to contact you with your personalized unlocking code. For best service, provide your email address.
To finish, select your payment method from the "Payment Details" pop up menu and then "Save" or "Copy" or "Print" the data from the Register program. Finally, send the data and payment to Kagi. Your options are:
1. If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is <sales@kagi.com> and their fax number is +1 510-652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgment when your order is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a valid email address you will receive an email acknowledgment.
2. If you are paying with Cash or a US Dollars Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street #392-QQN
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies.
Payments sent via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a valid email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed. If you have no email address, supply a postal address and check the "Postcard Receipt:" check box to receive acknowledgment by regular mail.
3. If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select "Invoice" as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
4. Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check, or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, your order cannot be processed.
UNLOCKING GEDitCOM
When your order is processed, you will get a temporary unlocking code that you can use until your personalized unlocking code arrives. Your personal unlocking code will arrive by email within about 3 business days after your order is processed (typically 1 day, occasionally more than 3 days; if no personalized unlocking code arrives, send a reminder email to <John.Nairn@m.cc.utah.edu> or <John.Nairn@kagi.com>). If you do not have an email address, your unlocking code will have to be sent by postal mail and will take longer. Your must supply your postal address if you do not give an email address.
After you get your unlocking code, simply enter your user name and your unlocking code in the dialog box that appears when GEDitCOM first starts. You will have to enter your temporary unlocking code every time your start GEDitCOM. Once you enter your personalized unlocking code, GEDitCOM will be permanently unlocked under your name.
